Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG), the largest cargo airport in China, has experienced an unprecedented crisis with widespread delays and flight cancellations due to the counter-attack of the pandemic. Shanghai International Airport Service (SIAS) suspended ramp operations after a positive case was detected, and all staff were sent for testing or into quarantine. “But Shanghai Pudong Airport is not closed, all terminals and flights remain operating,” according to the concerned authority. “In view of the spread of the pandemic, we’re temporarily restricting the acceptance of all cargo in Shanghai Pudong airport.”Scan Global Logistics (SGL), a global logistics provider, verified that SIAS had suspended operations until further notice, disrupting cargo handling for 17 airlines, such as Air China, Cathay Pacific, Qatar and Etihad. The sudden suspension of the important global cargo airport will cause lots of cargo to be offloaded and pile up at Shanghai Pudong airport, which might lead to innumerable challenges to the industry, and force forthcoming air freight rate to become “outrageous” due to severe lack of capacity. The report of Air Cargo World indicates that the air freight rate has soured by 20%~40% within the Pacific-Asia-to-Europe route. The most recent outbreak of COVID-19 in Shanghai Pudong airport may further increase the staggering air freight rate.
