Summer for the shipping industry can only be described as such, “hot”, “peak season”, “congestion”, and …. “even more congestion”.
Two major ports in the US, Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles, are seeing continuously breaking record levels of congestion since the start of the pandemic. Nowadays, berthing time for ships average 5 days or more! It looks like scheduling is going to be even harder now…
Last month, Gene Serok, Director of the Port of Los Angeles, observed that peak season has been repeating itself throughout the year. Now, in the second half of 2021, US consumer spending remains strong. Back-to-school supplies, winter clothing, Halloween supplies are all being shipped in advance. The indicators are clear, we will continue to see strong growth throughout the second half of the year.
On the East Coast of the United States, the Port of Savannah has also struggled with “congestion” throughout the year with 16 ships waiting to enter the port at any given time.
In New Zealand, the main Port of Auckland has seen its shipping schedule reliability drop from over 70% to 9.57% in November of last year! Now, as of April, the reliability rating has dropped to 5.56%, causing major disruptions to the timetables of foreign ports.
