According to reports, COSCO plans to provide shippers with a fast multimodal service, which aims to speed up the transportation of their cargoes from China to Chicago, the U.S.
Shippers can choose to transport their containers bound for Prince Rupert Port from Shanghai, Ningbo or Qingdao, and then carry them to Chicago through in-land railways.
Prince Rupert Port belongs to British Columbia, Canada, which is the destination with the shortest trade route between Asia and North America, and also plays an alternative route to enter Chicago, Detroit and Tennessee.
With the traffic jam outside the LA-LB ports and the blockage in the U.S.’ in-land transportation, the trade route from China to the West Coast of the U.S. which originally requires 14 days will cost shippers approximately 1 month to transit their freights to Chicago.

The one-month journey can be shortened to 19 days, said COSCO.
The container ships will berth in DP World dock, one dock in Prince Rupert Port, and its cargoes will be transported to the adjacent Canadian National Railway. Besides, COSCO also plans to provide this latest service to its Ocean Alliance’s partners including Evergreen and CMA CGM and extend their services to the eastern Canada and the U.S.
According to the data provided by the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the transportation volume of Vancouver and Prince Rupert Port accounts for 10% of the total volume in the West Coast of Canada, containing up to 90% of the total bound for the U.S.
