Critical! Vietnam to Develop New “Smart Customs”

By 2030, the Vietnamese government plans to revamp its customs system to be on par with the US Customs. The shift will have additional focus on the digital aspect, which the US Customs & Border Protection had implemented back in 2003. The aim of this new “Smart Customs” will be to improve the quality of service, effectiveness, and security for people and businesses in going through the customs procedure.

The Chairman of Vietnam’s General Department of Customs has emphasized on the automation of “Smart Customs”, which would be achieved through a digital platform and complies to international standards and requirements. The change in priorities to streamline and improve Vietnam’s customs system comes in the wake of COVID-19 port shutdowns and global port congestions. With Vietnam already playing such an important role in the global supply chain, this change is a necessary one to keep up with the digital revolution in logistics.
